Obituary for JoAnn Slay (Sanders)

JoAnn Sanders Slay, 85, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021 in Suwannee, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2021 at Glover Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Tom Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Ashford City Cemetery with Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. on Friday prior to service time.

Flowers are being accepted or donations may be made to your favorite Christian missions project (She had a heart for missions which included a mission trip teaching VBS to children in Brazil).

Mrs. Slay was born March 3, 1935 in Clopton, Alabama to James Glen Sanders, Sr. and Robbie Sophie Enfinger Sanders. She was a 1951 graduate of Dale County High School in Ozark and graduated from Troy State University in 1955 where she received her degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Slay taught at Cloverdale Elementary School and Southside Elementary School for 30 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Ashford United Methodist Church where she was a choir member, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study leader and member of the United Methodist Women.

She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Joe Slay, a sister, Betty Sanders Jordan (Dr. Jim Jordan) and a brother, Dr. Glen Sanders (Martha Sanders).

Survivors include three daughters, Lynn Slay Avrett (Frank), Sandy Slay Graves, Daisy Slay James (John); grandchildren, Trey Odum (Lindsi), Tripp Avrett (Hannah), Trevor Avrett, Griff Graves (Cassie), Dusty Graves (Karly), Slay James, Sophie James and Mary Sanders James; a brother, Dr. John Sanders (Lorraine). She was also blessed with many nieces and nephews and grand dogs, especially, Troy.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Trey Odum, Tripp Avrett, Trevor Avrett, Griff Graves, Slay James, and nephews, Brent Skidmore, Rob Sanders and Slay Stevens.
