Obituary for Reverend John H. Smith

Reverend John H. Smith, 90, affectionally known by many as “Brother John”, slipped peacefully away to his dear Savior on Sunday, October 31, 2021 with his loving wife and son by his side.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Malone, Florida. Reverend Smith will be placed in the church at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday for those who wish to pay their respects. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Ashford, Alabama with Glover Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Malone, Florida designated to the Brother John Smith Ministry Scholarship Fund to assist those seeking ministry education.

Brother John was born on August 29, 1931 in Troy, Alabama to Thomas Alto “T.A.” and Lizzie Collins Smith. He was married to Jean White in 1950 in Orlando, Florida. After his profession of faith and accepting the call into the ministry, he later attended The Baptist Bible Institute currently known as The Baptist College of Florida in Graceville.

Brother John pastored churches in the Wiregrass and Tri-State areas for over 52 years including Evergreen Baptist Church, Westville, FL, Antioch Baptist Church, Ashford, AL, Spring Creek Baptist Church, Donalsonville, GA, Santa Clara Baptist Church, Quincy, FL, Calvary Baptist Church, Cottonwood, AL, First Baptist Church, Cottonwood, AL, Jakin Baptist Church, Jakin, GA and First Baptist Church, Malone, FL. Brother John was known for being a loving friend and pastor to all people.

Brother John is predeceased by his parents and a son, David H. Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Jean Smith of Marianna, FL; his son, Steven A. Smith of Charlotte, NC; his grandson, Jon Smith (Jennifer); his great-grandson, Ethan Smith; two nephews, Larry Puckett and Kelvin Puckett, both of Orlando, FL.

The deacons of First Baptist Church of Malone will serve as active pallbearers for the funeral service. Additional pallbearers and honorary pallbearers who were friends of Brother John will also serve.

The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and thank the lovely teams at Westside Terrace Health and Rehab Center of Dothan, AL and Kindred Home Health of Marianna, FL who so lovingly cared for Brother John.
