Obituary for Nina West

Nina West, age 85, passed away on January 30, 2022. She was born on April 27, 1936, to parents Amos West and Nell Bush West, life-long residents of Barbour County.

Nina was educated at Bakerhill County School and the University of Alabama, where she enrolled in the newly founded School of Nursing. Upon graduation she joined the Army Nurses Corps, her life career. In addition to stateside assignment, tours of duty included Japan, NATO headquarters in Belgium and Vietnam. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 2 Overseas Bars,, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.

Nina retired after 23 years of service and chose Dothan as her permanent residence. During retirement she enjoyed karate, gardening and Bible study and was known for her joyful laugh, as well as her generosity and helpfulness to others. For many years she followed a three-county circuit, bringing cheer, small personal gifts and skilled nursing relief to many aging and confined relatives, neighbors and older friends. She encouraged, supported and sponsored higher education opportunities for many family members.

Nina is predeceased by her parents, sister Lillian West Hallman and special aunts Lelia West and Pauline West Wood. She is survived by sisters Sara Nell Wuska, Emogene Cullifer, Juanita Orton, many nieces and nephews and treasured friends.
