James “Lafayette” Dickerson, 72, a resident of Ashford, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020 at Flowers Hospital.

Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Ashford City Cemetery with Pastor Jerry Whitt officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the cemetery from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. In order for all to remain safe, all making and social distancing guidelines will be required for those attending the services.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First Assembly of God Church in Ashford, 120 Elmer Road, Ashford, Alabama, 36312.

Lafayette was born February 27, 1948 in Dothan to Wayne Buster and Ouida Rice Dickerson and was a lifelong resident of Ashford. He served his country in the Army National Guard. In earlier years, Lafayette enjoyed coon hunting. He loved fishing and was an avid Alabama football fan. Lafayette was a member of Ashford 1st Assembly of God Church.

Lafayette began his career as a barber 53 years ago. He spent 49 years with Woodland Sebring and was the owner and operator at the time of his death. “Laffy” as his customers called him, was one of the best in the business. Not only was he the barber for many, he was known to be quite the entertainer. A trip to Woodland Sebring ensured you of a good hair cut and many laughs from his stories that might include Alabama football, fishing or politics. He encouraged a generation of barbers that their careers were more than professions - they were friends to their customers. Many will miss having such a “sport” to keep them well groomed.

Lafayette is predeceased by his parents.

Survivors include his daughter Tona Williams; granddaughter, Mia Williams; a brother, Wayne Dickerson (Lydia); a special friend, Linda Sanders; a close friend, Gail Dozier; very close cousin, Billy Gene Dickerson (Patricia); a nephew, Shannon Dickerson (Nicole); a great niece and a great nephew, Ellie and Alex Dickerson.

Pallbearers will be Billy Cox, Keith Givens, Billy Gene Dickerson, Lendon Scott, Danny Nowell, and Randy Underwood.

Brad Tew will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Glover Funeral Home of Dothan has been entrusted with the arrangements. (334) 699-3888. Please sign the guestbook online at

Mr. Lafayette we will miss you. You have cut my dad's hair and my two sons..three generations now! You're sense of humor and giving me a hard time about Auburn will always stay with me. Memories of me being a toddler messing up your magazines on the table, the special treat of buble gum after a cut and actually getting to drink a coke out of a bottle from your vending machine. We love you Lafayette and you will always have a special place in our families heart. God bless you and may God forever hold you in eternity. Brandon, Denise, Evan and Keegan Exum.

Fayette styled my hair for 5 decades. He was also the best friend the whole time. He was a man with superior common sense.

La fet’ , as I called him, was my Dad’s first cousin. I will never forget the day he drove to Ashford Assembly and met my Dad, Biily Rice at the front door of the church. He loved my Dad and it was evident when he reached into his pocket, pulled out a comb and scissors and gave Dad a trim right then and there. Dad passed away a few weeks later. I took a photo of this and will always cherish it. I miss them both. Ken Rice

To the family of this awesome man! Just know one thing your Dad, your uncle or whoever he was to you. I have to say I moved to Dothan the last of 1989 and I had the honor of meeting this man. My first grandson was born in 94 and it began there. He cut his hair, and then in 2001 my second grandson was born and he got his first hair cut from This same awesome man. To know him was to love him. You will never be forgotten by my family RIP

We sure will miss Lafayette. He cut both of my boys hair as they grew up over the years. We always got a good laugh while in the barber shop with him. You may be gone but you will never be forgotten!! Rest In Peace my friend. The family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
